THE NIA TECHNIQUE

What is Nia? (pronounced knee-a)

nia Nia is an expressive body-mind-spirit movement program that offers an artistic and innovative approach to fitness and healing. Blending aspects of Martial Arts, Dance Arts, and Healing Arts, Nia provides a variety of movement dynamics to create an experience that involves your whole body, as well as your spirit. The stillness and concentration of Tai Chi, the dynamic poses of Yoga, the explosive power of Tae Kwon Do, and the grace and spontaneity of Modern and Ethnic dance make it possible to create a whole new sense of well-being! The use of eclectic, rich music, guided imagery, powerful kinesthetic cues, and heart-felt joy add to the full experience of a Nia class.

Nia classes are generally offered as group exercise classes that are one hour long. Regular attendance at a Nia class can result in weight loss, cardiovascular conditioning, stress relief, body-mind integration, pain management, improved self-image, social connection, and much, much more. Most people agree that Nia is fun! This keeps them coming back for more. Students of Nia enjoy the experience so much it is easy to make it part of their regular schedule. Beyond the fun of Nia, there is a more profound experience that comes from learning about, and moving in accord with, The Body's Way.

Nia is so gentle on the joints, it is typically done barefoot. However, students can also wear dance shoes if their body prefers the support. Nia is done wearing comfortable, breathable clothing that's as dressed-up or dressed-down as you like.

Jayne Mielo is a Nia Black Belt teacher and faculty trainer. With more then 20 years of teaching experience in New York City, she has brought classes to community centers, health clubs, spas, rehabilitation centers and after school programs.

In her yoga practice, Jayne is certified by the Himalayan Institute and also specializes in Judith Lasater's Relax and Renew Restorative Yogaª.

Balancing her time between the worlds of health/wellness and design, she inspires in others beauty and grace for both the body and the home. Jayne has a Masters Degree in Recreational Therapy from Lehman College, in New York City.

Lynn Peebles loves sharing the joy of movement as a Nia instructor. She is owner and manager of Studio 208, a "barefoot movement" center in Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY, and divides her time between NYC and the mid-Hudson Valley.

A former journalist and congressional press secretary, Lynn is also an AFAA Certified Group Exercise Instructor.
